I took my 99 Volvo s80 122*** miles to what I thought was a good shop when the transmission service light can one. The mechanic said the transmission might need replace but the diagnostics test read that the s1 or s2 solenoid (not sure which one but it was only one) was causing the service light. The mechanic said that in the past replacing the s1 and s2 solenoid works. Told my ”jones” stories and they always replace both due to the large labor charge and the parts are not expansive. When I drop the car off I asked to see the removed parts. The work was done for $852 and paid in full but the receipt only charged my for a s1 solenoid and gasket kit s1 plus trans fluid. They did not give my the removed parts. The service light is still on and when I went back to the shop diagnostic test read the s2 solenoid. He swears they replace both but only charge for s1 parts. Now they want to put a new transmission in. Any advice on what I should due.
the answer to your question is no. Unless you live in california, the only state where they have to give you back the removed parts, they do not have to give or show you the parts removed. Because they only charged you for the S1 solenoid and it’s the S2 solenoid that is faulty now they have technically not done anything wrong. If there is a problem with your transmission then it could actually cause the solenoid to continue to go bad even though they are replacing it. You may want, for your own peace of mind, to go to a different shop and just have them inspect the initial work and see what they have to say. They will be able to look for certain things that will tell them what work if any was done and what work needs to be done. IF they never did any work to begin with then at that point in time you could possibly start a law suit. But as long as they replaced No. 1 then you have no grounds for anything.
Honestly you probably should’ve just replaced the transmission to begin with. Certain repairs (ex: rebuilding master and slave cylinders, remachining rotors, porting and polishing heads) are called 50/50 repairs. That means that you really do have a 50/50 shot for them to work. When they do, your extatic because hey you saved XXXX amount of money but when they don’t everyone always gets mad because you just spent that money for nothing and you now have to spend even more money to fix it again.
