Auto Repair Cost Estimates

Auto insurance payout question?
I was involved in a minor car accident (not my fault) that caused some cosmetic damage to my car. My insurance company issued me a check (made payable to me) for the estimated cost of the repair minus my deductible. Well before I had a chance to get the car repaired, I got stuck with a major engine repair cost (not related to the accident). My question is – can I spend the insurance money I got on whatever I want (like the engine repair) or do I need to use it only for the body work?
Technically, you can spend the money on what you choose, but be careful when ignoring the damage that was done in the accident.
I had a similar situation last year, and chose to use the insurance money to pay off some bills since my car was okay. Then some lady hit me on the freeway, and damaged the car in the same area (but much worse). The body shop was unable to distinguish what damage was where, and I had to come up with the money that I had received from the insurance company to get the car fixed.
