What is the best way to get into the Automotive repair industry?

I am just toying with the idea of changing my current carrer path before its to late. I am 29 and I work in customer service. I think I might like to look into becoming an Auto technician. But what I need to know is where do I get the education to get into the industry? What are the typical barriers to entry? And ofcourse what can I expect to make when I initially make the transistion. I live in Denver CO. so if you have any specific info to that area that would also be greatly appriciated
