Why do auto scratches cost so much to repair?

Professional paint, sandpaper, and sealer don’t cost $200-$400, I would think somewhere below $50. I understand that auto shops have labor costs and most take their time and do it very well, but what makes it cost so much?
I realize that I’m probably ignorant about a few things in the process of professional scratch repair on vehicles, but I doubt any of it costs enough to put the price up that much

Depending on where the scratch is, how big it is, if the scratch has a crease in it and needs body work determines the cost.If you have a scratch let’s say on your door. The factory color on your car is in the sun every day.The UV rays fade the paint on a minuscule level everyday. So the color that the body shop has is not going to be exactly the same color as your car.So to fix that they blend the paint into the original color. What blending entails is taking a color and spraying the color out in layers and outward from the area worked on. If the scratch is near an edge of a door you would have to blend into two panels for the paint to match two doors. As far as the price of paint you have to understand all that goes into the paint process. If the scratch is down to the bare metal or plastic it needs a primer for the paint to stick to and a corrosive protectant for the bare metal. After the primer you need a sealer to help hide the primer and use less paint.I will give you a break down of the basics of mixing paint.
1 primer – reducer – activator
2 sealer – reducer – activator
3 Color – reducer
4 Clear – reducer – activator
plus the cost of labor and the materials ( sandpaper, masking paper, tape etc.).So each of these thing adds to the price of the job that they do.
I hope this clears up any questions you have.
