Why is my PC DVD player not working?

I use the PC CD/DVD player very often. Just a few hours ago, I put a DVD in and it did not open AUTO PLAY. I figured the setting just got changed and thought nothing of it until none of the programs read that there was a DVD. The DVD/CD-ROM folder did not show. After a few restarts and inserting the DVD again, sometimes it would open the DVD… most of the time it does not. The few times it does show there is a DVD in the drive, the DVD won’t work with many programs.

I’m going to take the PC in to get repaired at Best Buy’s Geek Squad ASAP tomorrow if I can’t get it to work. Thank you.
I have a Gateway notebook with Vista OS.

its a very common problem, especially with writer drives. pretty much the lens gets dirty, out of focus, or whatever. it happens to every drive. since your going to pay someone to fix it, i assume you arent a hardware-savvy type and wouldnt want to take it apart and fix it yourself, but if you got the urge, id recommend taking the drive housing off, cleaning the lens with a q-tip and alcohol, and blowing out any dust/hair/dirt or whatever may be in there, as thats all the geek squad is going to do unless you have the completely refurbish or replace it.
