I was driving a 2000 Oldsmobile Intrigue and was hit by a Ford Expedition. The top of my trunk is bent out of shape, bumper guard is torn and my liscence plate lights are broken. The auto body shop is indicating that they think they will find more damage when they take my car apart. What will happen if the repairs cost more than my car is worth? The claim is being handled by the other vehicle’s insurance as they are at fault.
The insurance company has an obligation to “make you whole.” If they wish to total, rather than repair your vehicle they must be willing to find you a replacement 2000 Intrigue with similar mileage in similar condition.
OR, you can accept their max offer, then go here;http://car-part.com/ and find a trunk lid, and bumper for $100.00! If your trunk still opens and closes, I’m sure all you’ll need is a deck lid, and just the bumper cover, but may need the re-bar as well. Check the site above and you can find stuff close to you, and maybe even the right color! You may have to hunt for someone to install the parts if you can’t do it yourself, but even then if the insurance settlement is maybe $1200.00, and you repair it yourself for $500.00, you are money ahead!
