Average Auto Repair Costs Brakes
Am I being ripped off?
I have a 2003 Pontiac Grand Am. I took the car for maintenance on Saturday. The mechanic told me I need front brakes and new rotors. He told me the entire cost of repair was almost $400.
My last car was a 2001 Chevy Malibu. The average cost of new brake pads and rotors was around $150 total. I have a local mechanic who is willing to do the brakes. He will only charge me for labor if I purchase the items beforehand. The total just for his work would be around $40 an hour labor.
I know the cost of auto repair is higher, but the $400 seems a little steep. My car’s brakes were replaced before I purchased the car. New brake pads and new rotors were done at that time. I thought that they would be able to turn the rotors if they
didn’t have alot of miles on them, and also they were in good condition. I have not heard the usual sound when the brake pads are going bad. I also don’t feel any pedal vibration. Any suggestions. Thanks for any answers.
Did he give you a reason why the rotors need to be replaced? The only time rotors need to be replaced is when they have been turned so much they are below a spcified limit it is stamped on the side of all rotors if I were you i would find a new mechanic and get a second third and fourth opinion
