1999 Ford Contour repair and dashlight problems?

My friend is an auto-body repairman and is currently fixing a 1999 Ford Contour. He’s having a problem though, because the dashlights will only come on when he puts the car in reverse. There isn’t any damage to the car. The dashlights are the only problem and that’s why the car was brought in. Does anybody know the procedure to make the dashlights work properly and where it can be found, or if there’s another problem underlying?

have you or him checked the ground wire going to the dash or trouble shot the fuses to see if you might have a problem with them or relay if hes working on the car in the shop ask one of the mechanics there look the problem up in the repair manuel etc etc etc good luck just think it through
