Im in my 2nd year of community college(still not done getting the A.A) and i already have 2 certificates in Auto repair , and small auto repair but i dont really have much hands on exp i never worked at a shop before at all….
my problem is
since its a non-paid internship
can someone tell me the pros and cons about working at a dealearship for free are?

like what to expect? , what can i expect to learn ? , how much will they make me do ? how many days a week do i have to work for free ?
like hours a day and stuff ?

the reason I’m doing this is so i can get some exp of how life goes on in a dealership/shop and get more familiar with cars
and to try to get a sponsorship to get into the 2 year advanced auto program at school Next year
is this really a good idea? should i go for it? help please i need answers
thanks in advance

I worked for a dealership in Southern Ca. for about a year. They will consider you to be a mechanics helper, and have you help get parts, and tools for the mechanic. They may also have you do some research, and a few of the easier tasks on vehicle like PDI inspections, oil changes etc.

Working for a dealer is a very fast paced and repetitive job. They are paid flat rate or flag time, and must finish a job within a certain amount of time. Sometimes they make lots of money by doing a job so many times they get very fast at it, and sometimes you lose money from it taking so much time.

Being at a dealership will gain you a working mechanical knowledge, but it will be brand specific. In the grand scheme of things all brands are built similar, but done differently. So if you work for FOrd for example and learn how they operate and how to diagnose them, it wont always translate into the same diagnosis on a GM or a Dodge.
All engines use virtually the same components, but they operate differently from brand to brand. I.E. A GM map sensor reads voltage, whereas a FORD unit reads frequency. Same principal, but a different way of getting there.
