1988 Toyota Land Cruiser Auto to 5 speed conversion?

Just wondering from the experts, what are the pro/cons of converting my automatic tranny to 5 speed. The price i have been quoted is almost $6 grand so it is not cheap but could you tell me about performance and MPG (if that matters in this vehicle)?

I use the vehicle in town and on highway, the offroading is for offroading/camping/fishing not for competitions or just showing off.

Thanks for your opinions and web links to mechanics/repair shops… much appreciated.

$6 grand for a shop to convert it is probably about right. It’s a lot of work and parts. And why not just sell your auto and buy a stick shift one. The $6 grand you don’t spend on the conversion can be put towards buying a newer model with stick shift or upgrading whatever you buy.

You’re not going to notice enough (if any) mpg or performance improvements to make spending that much money worth it. And if you’re not a hardcore offroader, why do the conversion in the first place? The auto is much easier to drive on the road and off road.

I’ve done the conversion on a couple of Jeeps for my customers, and they regretted spending the money in the long run. Everyone thinks they want a stick because they think it’s so much better until they have to put up with driving it everyday. I say keep the auto.
