Are Auto Repairs cheaper at a dealer or ind. Repair Shop?

Is a dealer’s higher hourly/parts rate offset by the fact that they have seen more of the same problem on the same make/model and thus can troubleshoot/fix it faster? I have a Chrysler minivan with electrical problems and am not sure if I should take to an independant repair shop of dealer (its out of warranty).

When it comes to diagnostics the dealer will be your best bet cause they work on your vehicle day in and day out, plus they have access to schematics and direct help from manufacturer engineering.
